Emily Abbood, PA-C
Physician Assistant
Emily Abbood grew up in southern Rhode Island and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Health from the University of California Berkeley in 2012 where she was also a Division One Women’s lacrosse player. She received her Masters of Science degree from the Bryant University Physician Assistant Program in March 2019. She is a member of the Phi Alpha National Honor Society for Physician Assistants as well as a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA). Emily has been practicing as an ENT Physician Assistant since she graduated from PA school in 2019- initially at University Otolaryngology then developed to the inpatient ENT team at Rhode Island Hospital where she has developing her set of skills over the past two years. In her free time she enjoys being outdoors, running, paddle boarding and cooking for her family and friends. Emily is a board-certified Physician Assistant (PA-C) through the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).

Jan C Groblewski, MD
Pediatric ENT
Dr. Jan Groblewski (pronounced ‘Grow-bless-ski’) joined University Otolaryngology in 2009 after completing a Pediatric Otolaryngology fellowship at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC. A native New Englander, Dr. Groblewski earned his B.A. in Sociology/Anthropology from Middlebury College (VT) in 1999 and his M.D. from The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 2003. He then completed a 5-year residency in Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery at Georgetown University Medical Center.
Dr. Groblewski is the Director of Pediatric Otolaryngology and the Associate Director of the Cleft and Craniofacial team at Hasbro Children’s Hospital. He serves as the residency site director for rotating Otolaryngology residents from Tufts University Medical Center. Dr. Groblewski is actively involved in clinical research and is an Associate Professor of Surgery & Pediatrics, Clinician Educator, at the Warren Alpert School of Medicine at Brown University. Dr. ‘G’ lives in Providence with his wife, 2 daughters, and dog Huckleberry. He is a lifelong soccer fanatic and currently plays for the Providence City F.C. Men’s Over 40 team.
Sharon E. Gibson, MD, FACS
Pediatric ENT
Dr. Gibson was born and raised in Michigan. She received her undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Michigan, completed residency training in Otolaryngology at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) Eye and Ear Infirmary, and fellowship training in Pediatric Otolaryngology at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. She returned to UIC as the director of Pediatric Otolaryngology for the next 3 years. In 1996, she left the Midwest and came to Rhode Island as the first subspecialty trained Pediatric Otolaryngologist in the state and director of Pediatric Otolaryngology at Hasbro Children’s Hospital, a position she held for 20 years. She continues to practice and teach as a clinical assistant professor at Tufts University School of Medicine and clinical associate professor at Brown University’s Alpert School of Medicine. Her favorite activities include camping at music festivals, fitness training and time with family. Although her three sons are grown, she and her husband are not “empty nesters,” as they enjoy the company of their beloved field spaniel and have inherited a leopard gecko, a hermit crab and a python named Monty.
Andrew E. Burchard, MD, FACS
Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
Dr. Andrew Burchard joined University Otolaryngology in 2012. He earned his B.A. degree in Neuroscience from Colgate University in Hamilton, NY in 1997 and his M.D. from The Sidney Kimmel School of Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA in 2003. He completed a 1-year Surgical Internship and subsequent 4-year residency in Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery at Tufts Medical Center in Boston. He served as Co-Chief Resident in Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery from 2007-2008. Dr. Burchard then continued his surgical training in Fellowship in Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at Toronto General Hospital in Toronto, ON from 2008-2009. He is double board certified in both Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery and Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery. He spent 3 years as a Facial Plastic Surgeon in private practice in Sarasota, FL before relocating to Rhode Island in 2012. Dr. Burchard is a Clinical Associate Professor of Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery at the Warren Alpert School of Medicine at Brown University, and an Adjunct Clinical Professor of Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery at Tufts University School of Medicine. He is a member of the American Academy of Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, the American Academy of Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery and is a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Burchard currently serves as the President of University Otolaryngology as well as the Clinical Director of the Rhode Island Hospital ENT Resident Clinic. He lives in North Kingstown with his wife and 2 children.
Robert G. McRae, MD, FACS
General Otolaryngologist
Dr. McRae, a general otolaryngologist, graduated cum laude from Harvard University, majoring in English Literature in 1972. He went on to Tufts University School of Medicine, and after graduating in 1976, he performed his surgical residency at Rhode Island Hospital and his Otolaryngology residency at Yale University of Medicine. He has been board certified in Otolaryngology since 1979, and is well known for his kind nature and warm approach to how he cares for his patients. Dr. McRae enjoys traveling, playing the cello and playing golf in his spare time.
Charles M. Ruhl, MD
General Otolaryngologist
Dr. Charles Ruhl attended medical school at University of Virginia from 1989-1993, and then completed his 5 year residency in General Surgery and Otolaryngology at University of Cincinnati. He then joined University Otolaryngology in 1998. Dr. Ruhl is a General Otolaryngologist who enjoys taking care of patients of all ages. His clinical/surgical interests include Pediatric Otolaryngology (treatment of children with recurrent ear infections, sleep apnea related to tonsil and adenoid issues, and chronic tonsillitis), patients with hearing loss, patients with sinus and nasal issues (chronic sinusitis, nasal polyps, septal deviation), and patients with swallowing and voice disorders. Dr. Ruhl is also able to clinically evaluate patients with thyroid nodules, neck masses, and head and neck tumors, and can provide an appropriate treatment plan for these patients. Outside of medicine he enjoys spending time with his family, walking the family dog, hiking, biking, skiing, golf, and paddle boarding.
Dr. Frederick A. Godley III, MD, FACS

Dr. Frederick Godley attended the Boston University School of Medicine, trained as a general surgeon at the University of Massachusetts and completed his otolaryngology residency at Yale New Haven Hospital. He was an attending at Johns Hopkins Hospital before moving to Rhode Island in 1989. He worked with Harvard Pilgrim Healthcare of New England until founding Alliance ENT in 2000. He was the chief of otolaryngology at the Miriam Hospital until joining University Otolaryngology in 2015. His clinical and research interest focuses on the impact of migraine on this specialty. BRIAN E. DUFF, MD, FACS
Brian Duff grew up in Southeastern Ohio and obtained a BA in Zoology from Miami (of Ohio) University. Following graduation from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine he completed an internship and residency in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He then completed a fellowship in Otology, Neurotology and Skull Base Surgery at the Michigan Ear Institute prior to moving to Rhode Island in 1996.
Dr Duff is the only practicing Otologist, Neurotologist in Rhode Island. He was the first surgeon to perform a Cochlear Implant in RI in 2001. He has been the Medical Director of the Surgery Center of Rhode Island (Formerly the ENT Center of RI) since it’s inception in 2008 and Otolaryngologist-in-Chief at Rhode Island Hospital / Hasbro Children’s Hospital since 2009.
In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Dr Duff enjoys spending time with his family and friends camping, backpacking and fishing.
