Physical Therapy For Vestibular and other Balance Disorders
Depending on your specific diagnosis, physical therapy might be the recommended treatment based on evidence-based medical treatment guidelines.
According to published peer-reviewed clinical research studies, 85% of unexplained balance-related issues are due to problems associated with the inner ear. Patients experiencing these conditions often experience marked improvement when treated by a vestibular physical therapy regimen that is tailored to the individual patient and to the specific diagnosis
Patients who experience the following symptoms may be candidates for this type of treatment:
- Vertigo especially when it is positional
- Recurrent balance problems
- Loss of balance due to position changes
- Loss of balance due to motion
- Repeated falls
Treatment sessions for new patients typically last about 1 hour. Vestibular therapy is recommended for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) and disorders that cause a loss of vestibular function, and general physical therapy helps many patients with other causes of their imbalance.
A specific diagnosis helps your physical therapist to know how to best treat you, but some problems such as BPPV can be diagnosed by the physical therapist. Study results have shown that patients treated with physical therapy experience improved overall function in their daily activities, fewer symptoms of dizziness and imbalance, and a decreased risk of falls and injuries.
